David Beckham is renowned for his attention-grabbing attire and he enhanced his reputation by donning the green-and-gold scarf worn by Manchester United fans angered at the Glazer familys debt-laden ownership of the club. The colours were those of Newton Heath, the predecessors of Manchester United, and thus a link with a more innocent past. Beckham said: I am a Manchester United fan and I support the club. I always will. I saw the scarf there and just put it round my neck. Its the old colours. Thats all I know. Its nothing to do with me how its run. Thats to do with other people. I support the team. Sir Alex Fergusons team put on a majestic performance against a backdrop of anti-Glazer protests. Wayne Rooney scored twice as Manchester United beat Milan 4-0 on the night and 7-2 on aggregate to ease into the Champions League quarter-finals. United’s other two goals were scored by Ji-Sung Park and Darren Fletcher.

Manchester United opened their Champions League campaign with a 1-1 draw against Benfica in Lisbon. The Eagles had the best of the early exchanges with Nicolas Gaitan firing a shot just wide and Oscar Cardozo testing Anders Lindegaard with a low drive. But Benfica were rewarded on 24 minutes when Cardozo controlled a pass from Gaitan on his chest and stepped past Jonny Evans before drilling the ball into the corner from just outside the box. United had offered little going forward but levelled the match (42) when Ryan Giggs took a pass from Antonio Valencia in his stride and crashed a drive into the top corner from the edge of the box.
