Manchester United moved to within a point of a record 19th title after a deserved win against closest rivals Chelsea at an exultant Old Trafford. United manager Sir Alex Ferguson insisted victory would effectively end Chelsea’s reign as champions and return the Premier League crown to United, writing a fresh chapter in the club’s glittering history. And United wasted no time in exerting their authority on Chelsea as Javier Hernandez struck after only 36 seconds and captain Nemanja Vidic headed the second in a blistering opening spell that established the foundations for what is likely to prove a decisive victory. Frank Lampard gave Chelsea a glimmer of hope with a scrappy strike midway through the second half – but it was United who still looked more likely to score, even in the anxious closing stages before Old Trafford erupted in celebration as Howard Webb blew the final whistle. And as if to emphasise the significance of events, Ferguson was even moved to bow in front of the Stretford End as he marched triumphantly towards the dressing room.

Don’t expect injuries or a frustrating afternoon in Stoke to take the bite out of the old dog that is Manchester United, especially as they face an underperforming Basle in their next Champions league Group match. To most sides, the news that a striker of Wayne Rooney’s calibre is likely to be sidelined for the next two weeks with an ankle injury, would be awful news. And while the medics report won’t have Alex Ferguson chewing “happy” gum it’s not as if Manchester United are a team forged around a single striker. Rooney missed out on the trip to Stoke (a game which ended 1-1 against almost all predictions) after suffering a hamstring injury in training last Friday. He’ll likely miss the next two games for United too; firstly the Champions League tie at home on Tuesday to Basel and Norwich City in the EPL next weekend. The hair and everything under it being resigned to an observational role probably won’t affect the result in either game but might keep the goals down. The bigger picture is that the striker could also be doubtful for England’s final Euro 2012 qualifier against Montenegro on 7 October. Elsewhere, there were further issues at the top for Ferguson as Javier Hernandez limped off during the Stoke match, seemingly suffering a dead leg, and is a major doubt for the Basle fixture. And don’t forget Nemanja Vidic remains sidelined. Conversely the Swiss side have almost a full squad to play with, but will be lacking central midfielder Benjamin Huggel who was sent off …
